Who does God Say I Am?

Who does God Say I Am?

Who does God Say I Am?

Who Does God Say I Am?

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10

In part 1 we asked the question, “Who am I?” and discovered that we are more than our talents and associations. We are, in fact, a masterpiece of God’s making, a work of art, loved by the Artist.

But what does that mean?

In this post we’ll look at some of the things God has said about us that help us understand who we are and what that means.

You are a new creation.

The first thing we need to understand is that the moment we accept Jesus as our Saviour, giving our lives to Him, we are changed.

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17

To understand how amazing this is, we need to realize what the old life consisted of, and why we needed this change.

When Adam and Eve sinned, all of humanity took on a sinful nature. We are all born with a bent towards wrong-doing and selfishness. Paul tells us in Romans 3:10 that no one is righteous – not even one. And since the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23a) this is a problem!

Fortunately Paul went on to explain that the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23b)

He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. Ephesians 1:7

By giving your life to Jesus, you allow His sacrifice to cancel your debt (the “wages of sin” is your debt), giving you freedom and forgiveness instead! How amazing is that! This is what Paul meant when he said the old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5:17b) The old life, that had a debt payable only by death, is gone. A new, eternal life has begun!

The first thing to understand about your identity is that you are a new creation, one who is forgiven and promised eternal life!

You are a new creation!

You are God’s beloved child.

As if that weren’t enough, God did more than that when He saved you. He welcomed you into His family!

But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are! 1 John 1:3

And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:18

Parents love their child because she is their child. Adoptive parents made her their child because they loved her.

This is what God becomes to us. He loved you so much, He adopted you as His child! No one chooses to adopt someone they don’t love deeply.

You are a new creation with eternal life.

You are God’s beloved child.

You are God’s friend.

When my kids became teens and then adults they also became my friends. This is how God sees us, as His children and His friends.

So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. (Romans 5:11)

Can you imagine being friends with a celebrity? Imagine if your favourite singer or actor called you up every time they were in town and took you to lunch. Imagine chatting with them about your life and theirs, and just having a good time together.

Do you understand that the biggest celebrity of all, the God who created the entire universe, is your friend? Wow. He is always in town and wants to chat with you about your life. That’s a funny way to say it, but God says you are His friend. And that’s a pretty incredible truth about who you are!

You are a new creation. You are God’s child. You are God’s friend. Unlike your talents, interests, and human friends, these truths about you will never change. Once God transforms your life, it stays transformed! This is the essence of who you are, and nothing can ever change it.

Next time we’ll look at what these truths mean in a practical sense as we live out our faith. How, then, should we live?
