The Authority
Before we look at the commandments, we need to look at the command-giver. God prefaced His instruction with this reminder, “I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.” (Exodus 20:2)
When someone gives us instruction there are two things they must have: knowledge and authority.
First they need knowledge. If I try to help you improve your basketball pass, you’d be well-advised to ignore me because I have no knowledge of basketball! I could advise you on a career choice based on the need in society, but if I don’t know where your skills and passions lie it wouldn’t be wise advice.
Second, there needs to be authority, a right to give instruction. Parents can instruct their child. Teachers can advise their students. Governments can make laws for their citizens.
In His opening statement, God establishes knowledge and authority. I am the Lord your God.
He prayed, “O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!” 2 Chronicles 20:6
God has authority.
…who rescued you from the land of Egypt. He understands the people and their situation.
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. Psalm 139:1
Psalm 139 tells us that He knows everything about us, too.
God has the authority and knows us better than we know ourselves. We can trust Him and confidently follow His commands.
All he does is just and good,
and all his commandments are trustworthy.
They are forever true,
to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity. Psalm 111:7-8
