We aren’t allowed to high five each other

We aren’t allowed to high five each other

We aren’t allowed to high five each other

My kids came home from elementary school the other day and said, “There’s no more competitive play allowed at school anymore during lunch break.”

A little puzzled by this, I asked, “What do you mean by that?”

Cally, my 8 year old, replied, “That means when we play against each other we aren’t allowed to keep score, we aren’t allowed to high five each other, we’re not allowed to shake hands after the game to say ‘good game’ and we aren’t allowed talk about the game after.”

“Wait, what?”
I asked in disbelief.

Jonathan, my 13 year old pipes in, “And if you celebrate three times you go to the principal’s office and your parents get called. It’s because there’s been too much arguing and fighting at school when kids play against each other that they added that rule. ”

Even writing about this I can’t help but shake my head at how nonsensical this seems. But it’s no different than what our society does today, instead of dealing with the human heart -which it can’t if it doesn’t believe in sin and the need for a savior- it piles on rule upon rule to try to govern our behaviour.

I can’t think of a single rule that hasn’t been broken.

“For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.” Matthew 15:19

I’m so thankful for a God who knows our heart and can change it. Let’s pray that our heavenly Father would mold the hearts of Ontario’s kids in His image, and let’s pray we would be willing to do our part.

Whether you are able to give once, or monthly, we thank you for your unwavering support.

I hope your New Year is off to even better start than you could have asked for.
