The Names

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
    And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah told the people they would be saved from captivity. He told them the Light of the World would come. Then He gave them a glimpse of Who that Light is.

He is the King who will reign forever.

The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.  Revelation 11:15-19

He is a wonderful (or exceptional) Counsellor.

The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious law. Mark 1:22

He is Mighty God.

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation…  Colossians 1:15

He is the Everlasting Father.

The Father and I are one. John 10:30

He is the Prince of Peace.

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.  John 16:33

The significance of Christmas is to remind us of who Jesus is:  eternal King, amazing Teacher, mighty God.
