#4 of 12 Things

Take One Bite at a Time

DReading the Bible can sometimes feel like a daunting task.  To read the Bible in a year it would take you roughly 12-15 minutes a day for 365 days.

If you’re trying to do it with your kids it would probably take even longer.

When you approach reading the Bible you have to decide what you want to get out of it. If you want to get a “survey” of the Bible, reading it in a year would work just fine.

But if you want to “digest” and “meditate” on what you’re reading, reading a few verses a day might be more the pace you’re looking for.

A Jr. High student I used to work with, Michael, was phenomenal at memorizing Bible verses. He knew more than most adult Christians I knew.  I’m pretty sure he had also read the whole Bible already.

A couple years later he joined CEF’s summer missions program.

One of the most important things we do at our summer missions training is teach the students to have an application for the Christian, and non-Christian child with every Bible verse they teach.

Immediately after that class I heard Michael say, “All those verses I memorized over the years, now I actually know what they mean!”

Can you imagine having dozens of Bible verses memorized but not understanding their true value?

Reading the Bible is one thing, but understanding what it means is a whole other thing.

So, the next time you read the Bible with your child, or for yourself, just take it one bite at a time, and you’ll find it digests so much better.
