Music

We’ve been exploring some of the ways we can worship God between the Sundays and this week we’re going to talk about music.  We regularly worship through music at church, but music can also be a great way to worship God at home!

Worship happens when we acknowledge God’s greatness and our need of Him.  Some music is written specifically to do this, but the style doesn’t really matter. Hymns, contemporary songs, rap…if the lyrics honour God you can use it to worship Him.

What about instrumentals? Since God created music we can worship Him through the music itself. Again, we need to discern what we’re listening to and what feelings it evokes. Music is a powerful medium and some music can stir up ungodly attitudes in us, like anger and despair, as much as other music stirs gratitude and awe of our Creator.

You can also combine music with virtually any of the other ways to worship God! Listen while you walk through nature, thank God for things the songs bring to mind, etc. To combine music with Scripture, I created a playlist that contains at least one song for every Psalm. Listen to my list here or create your own!

If God has given you musical abilities, use them for His glory in worship. There is something about making music solely for God, when no one else is around, that can be very worshipful.

Sing a new song to the Lord!

Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!

Sing to the Lord; praise his name.

Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.

Psalm 96:1-2

God gave us music to express ourselves when words just aren’t enough. When you know you should worship, but don’t have the words, or don’t feel like you can worship in that moment, try putting on some well-chosen music and worship Him between the Sundays.
