Do Good

Do Good

Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Exodus 20:8

The Pharisees were serious law-keepers. They were so afraid of breaking one of the commandments that they made extra rules just to make sure they stayed well away from the edge of breaking the actual command.

But in doing so they missed the point.

The Pharisees got it wrong and Jesus told them so, as He proceeded to heal a man on that sacred day.

Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27

Jesus was all about doing good for people, and He never hesitated to help on the Sabbath. So what better way to honour Him on the day we set aside to worship Him than doing good for people?

As with most of the rules God has given us, it’s about the heart.
The Sabbath was given as a means for humans to rest and to remember the God who gave us all we have. Honouring Him should be our goal in everything we do 1-Corinthians 10:31 and the Sabbath is a weekly reminder that this is our goal. Set aside your own pursuits, get together with other believers, worship Him, and do good.

“Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath
and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,
and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.
Then the Lord will be your delight.”
Isaiah 58:13-14a
