Last words: Finished

Be Honest

You must not testify falsely against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16

“It’s only a little white lie.” If it’s only a small lie it doesn’t really matter. Right?   Ironically, this is possibly the greatest lie we tell ourselves.

Paul says that lying is part of our old sinful nature. He calls it a “wicked deed.”

Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Colossians 3:9

And in a letter to Timothy, he included lying with a pack of other sins we tend to take more seriously.

The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God. 1 Timothy 1:10-11

It seems honesty is very important to Jesus. Since Jesus is Truth, when we lie we dishonour His very nature.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.  John 14:6

For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

It seems a little more cut and dry than we like to think.  Jesus is truth.  Satan is the father of lies. Pick a side.
